Walkers at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer / Photo by Kathryn VandenHeuvel

Each October the American Cancer Society hosts “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walks throughout America, in order to raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer. The walk that occurred in Long Island, New York this year had the largest turnout in the country just like it has in years prior.

For me, this slideshow was very touching. I loved the pictures, and how we caught glimpses of breast cancer survivors and their families. The audio was very well though-out, and the pictures went well with it.

  2. Kathryn,

Your photos really lined up with your audio which makes the slideshow even easier to watch and enjoy. Your photos were great and really captured the spirit of the walk. Your slideshow was entertaining but also very informative which are two important parts of journalism.

I loved this slideshow because it was informative and inspirational. The pictures were great and the story behind it was event better. I think this story has a lot of significance esppecially after the passing of Elizabeth Edwards Tuesday. It shows us how important fund raising events like this are so we can not only raise awareness but donate money to help search for cure.

  4. I had no idea Long Island had the highest breast cancer rate! This slide show was not only informative, but also inspiring. My grandmother was a breast cancer survivor so it is really nice to see all of these people coming out to support a great cause. The pictures were put together so nicely along with the audio.

  5. Katie, the pictures you used in your slideshow are all very high-quality and colorful. They definitely helped make your slideshow very powerful. It’s an interesting story and I enjoyed learning more about the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk.

I especially like this slideshow because I am close with many women who have had breast cancer at one point in their life. In one case in particular, I was friends with a woman who I knew through my brothers little-leauge baseball team. She was very young, around her 40′s, and eventhough she was sick she always showed up to her son’s games. Her story truly inspired me and I now get the sense that every woman with breast cancer is a strong individual both physically and mentally. When she passed in the summer, for the resepct for the baseball team (her son), played in the playoff game nearly one week after her death. This was truly touching to not only me, but the team, coaches parents, as well. It was a truly inspiring story and this slideshow brought back these memories.

  8. I think the photograph for “Making Strides” is excellent. Even though it is just a photograph, it captures the exhaustion, the hope, the determination, etc., between the marathoners. I also think it is excellent how the woman who is, in my opinion, featured in the photograph is wearing a bright pink t-shirt whith the word Survior on the back, further sharing the message of hope and determination. Well done.

  9. I remembered the image you turned in from this event for photojournalism and I’m glad I got to see more of them. Great pictures! It must have been awesome being a part of such a large group of people supporting a wonderful cause.

  10. I really enjoyed this slideshow. It is current, inspirational, and will hopefully motivate more women to participate in the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All of your photos were vivid and nicely done.

  11. You did a great job of taking meaningful candid photos. My favorites were the picture of the woman in the pink cowboy hat, because it was taken at a fabulous angle and the picture of the woman’s back with the sticker that said she was walking for her mother, because it captured the emotional aspect of this event.

  12. Your photos lined up very well with your audio. Loved how you captured the millions of people who come out to walk during the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Watching this video should have an inspiration on others to want to join in on the march.

  13. This is a very uplifting, yet exciting video. There is such a new buzz about applying a happy and energizing attitude to these fundraising walks, instead of having them be so solemn. I think it goes with the whole “taking it back/fighting back” mentality. You really captured this spirit well in your slideshow, while also being informative and attention-grabbing.

I think what made your slideshow so interesting is that you captured the perspective of the people in the walk who are there supporting loved ones. The people suffering from cancer are obviously the most important, but the people who suffer with them also have so much to share. I like that you captured all different types of people and the way they each participated. Like Sam said earlier, you captured the informative and entertaining side of journalism which is not always easy to do.

  15. The script, in my opinion, really helped make for a touching slide show. The photos were great as well. They were impacting and went quite well with the audio. Overall, I really really really enjoyed this one and thought it was both well done and a meaningful piece.

  16. Not only was your slideshow extremely informative and descriptive, but it was so emotionally grabbing that it touches the heart and soul of the viewer. If you put this slideshow in an feature article format, I am sure that it would constantly grab the reader, pulling them in so they would help fully support this worthy cause. Excellent photos, topic, and overall presentation!
